Locum General Practitioners – Ongoing Opportunities with the Irish Prison Service
The Irish Prison Service is seeking experienced and compassionate Locum General Practitioners to provide primary care services across multiple custodial facilities nationwide. These roles offer a unique opportunity to work within multidisciplinary teams, delivering essential healthcare to individuals in custody.
Available Shifts
We currently have ongoing locum opportunities across various locations with the following schedules:
Days and Hours
Monday – Friday9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Wednesdays9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Saturdays 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM / 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM / 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sundays9:00 AM – 2:00 PM 3 weekdays (flexible) 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Weekday flexibility include preference for Mondays and Fridays, with optional coverage on Tuesdays through Thursdays.)
Role Overview
As a Prison Doctor, you will be a vital member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, working alongside:
Acting Executive Clinical Lead
Nursing Management and prison nursing staff
Allied health professionals including pharmacists, dentists, opticians, and chiropodists
Your responsibilities will include:
Delivering high-quality primary care to individuals in custody
Developing and managing individualized care plans
Addressing complex mental health and addiction-related health concerns
Collaborating closely with nursing and healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care
Required Experience
Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience, including at least 1 year in community General Practice
Experience in custodial or prison healthcare settings is highly desirable
Confidence in managing complex mental health and addiction issues is a strong advantage
