What to Ask Before Accepting a Locum Assignment

A locum assignment can offer flexibility, experience in different clinical settings and greater control over your working life. However, deciding whether to accept a booking requires more than checking the location, dates and hourly rate.

For doctors considering locum doctor jobs in Ireland, the most useful question is whether an assignment provides the right conditions to practise safely and confidently. Understanding the responsibilities, support and practical arrangements beforehand helps protect your professional standards and makes joining an unfamiliar team more straightforward.

Whether you are an experienced locum or exploring your first assignment, these are the questions worth asking.

1. What will I actually be expected to do?

A job title does not always explain the full scope of a booking. Before accepting, clarify the grade, specialty, department and patient group you will cover.

Ask whether the role involves ward duties, clinics, admissions, procedures, on-call responsibilities or cross-cover for another service. Establish whether you will work across multiple locations and whether the expected duties could change during the assignment.

Be specific about your own experience, too. If a procedure or responsibility falls outside your current competence, raise it before confirming availability. An appropriate placement should match your clinical capabilities as well as your registration.

2. Who will provide clinical support?

Understanding the support structure is particularly important when joining a department for the first time.

Who is the supervising consultant? What senior cover is available overnight or at weekends? How should you escalate a deteriorating patient, seek a second opinion or raise a concern about staffing?

The answers should explain how support works in practice. Knowing that a consultant is available is useful; knowing how to contact them and what to do if they cannot be reached is more useful still.

Clear escalation arrangements help you make timely decisions and work effectively within the team.

3. What induction will I receive?

Clinical experience does not remove the need to understand local systems. The HSE identifies induction as the process of introducing employees to their workplace and colleagues, with site induction forming part of its wider approach.

Ask when your induction will take place, what it covers and whether any required attendance is included in the booking arrangements.

You should clarify access to patient records, prescribing systems, investigation results, identification badges and relevant local policies. Confirm who will provide a clinical handover and explain emergency procedures.

A practical question is: “Will my system access and essential introductions be ready before I begin clinical duties?”

4. What are the exact hours and rota arrangements?

Confirm start and finish times, shift patterns, on-call commitments and the duration of the assignment. Ask whether the rota is final and how any changes will be communicated.

It is also worth discussing breaks, rest facilities and the process for recording additional hours. Consider the assignment alongside your other clinical commitments and travel time, particularly when moving between day and night work.

A booking that fits your diary may still be difficult to sustain if it leaves insufficient time to recover. Assess the whole working pattern before agreeing.

5. What registration, clearance and indemnity arrangements apply?

Doctors practising in the Republic of Ireland must hold current, appropriate Medical Council registration. The Council also requires adequate professional indemnity cover before practice begins.

Ask which documents and clearances are required for the particular assignment, who checks them and whether anything remains outstanding. Depending on the role, this may include occupational health clearance, references, Garda vetting and evidence of relevant training.

Clarify the indemnity arrangements for the actual setting and duties. Do not assume that cover associated with another position automatically extends to every locum assignment. The Medical Council’s guidance distinguishes between practice settings, so confirm the position with the relevant provider where necessary.

6. How will payment and contractual arrangements work?

Request written confirmation of the agreed rate and the arrangements for standard hours, nights, weekends, public holidays and additional work.

Establish who will employ or engage you, how payment will be processed and what documentation you must submit. Ask who approves timesheets, when they are due and when payment should be expected.

Check cancellation terms, notice requirements and what happens if the assignment is shortened or extended. Where travel or accommodation support is offered, confirm the details and any conditions before booking.

Written clarity gives everyone a shared understanding and reduces avoidable administration later.

7. Does the assignment support my wider career plans?

The best locum assignment is not necessarily the one with the highest advertised rate. It may offer a more suitable rota, relevant specialty experience, a manageable commute or the chance to return to a department you know well.

Ask whether feedback or a reference may be available after the placement. If maintaining professional development is a priority, discuss whether there are opportunities to attend relevant departmental teaching, without assuming these form part of every booking.

Locum work should support the way you want to practise and develop, alongside meeting your immediate availability.

Make your next assignment an informed decision

A recruitment consultant should help turn a vacancy description into a clearer picture of the role. Share your experience, preferred locations, availability and any limits on the duties or shifts you can undertake. Ask for unresolved questions to be clarified before confirming the booking.

At Locum Express, we welcome conversations with doctors looking for their next opportunity in Ireland. Whether you want occasional shifts or a longer assignment, discussing your priorities is a useful first step towards finding a suitable role.
